FRBRizing MARC records with the FRBR

A Conceptual Model Based on User Needs FRBR, the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, is a conceptual model, establishing the purposes, uses, and requirements for bibliographic records. FRBR sets out “a clearly defined, structured framework for relating the data that are recorded in bibliographic records to the needs of the users of those records.” We need such a framework because “the catalog of the future, and even the catalog of the present, isn't like the catalog of the past.” Automation, changes in user expectations, increasing opportunities for national and international collaboration, and economic pressures are driving changes in cataloging practices. FRBR can be seen as part of the ongoing evolution of cataloging.
